L'Astore

Puglia, Italy

Located in Puglia's Salento region, Masseria L'Astore in Cutrofiano covers 80 hectares of vineyards and olive groves near the Adriatic, held by the Benegiamo family since 1935. Founded by Achille Benegiamo, it shifted from bulk production in the 1940s to quality focus in the 1990s via surveys and revival of native varieties. Sustainable organic farming occurs on ancient alberello-trained vines in calcareous-clay soils moderated by sea breezes, growing Negroamaro, Primitivo, Malvasia, and Susumaniello for reds and whites. Features include an 18th-century underground hypogeum oil mill and a modern wine cellar. The estate draws from Grecìa Salentina heritage. Its position between Gallipoli and Otranto includes the underground press and cellar for a blend of historical and contemporary elements in olive oil and wine production.
